It’s 70’s fever at Handmade By Me

70’s style retro is the order of the day with this quirky photo shoot of some of our latest products, styled and shot by the lovely and very talented Kristy Snell of Delisous.

Prawn cocktail and flamingoes, grapefruit and proteas, peas and prickly pears, jelly, bubblegum ice-cream, alphabet soup, and even Brad Pitt get a feature here (- even though we know Brad Pitt is not from the 70’s, but really, who cares?) With such a quirky combination of 70’s style dining and our favourite hot new products, we really couldn’t love these images any more than we do.

Kristy used a combination of our trays, napkins, tea towels, table runners, muslin blankets, slippers and tote bags for the shoot. All of which are on sale at our retail store off Kloof street, as well as our online shop.

If you would like to see what other mouth-wateringly delicious things Kristy has been whipping up in the kitchen, be sure to check out the Delisous blog. Warning: do not look when you are hungry. And I promise you will not regret it!

And for our friends in Joburg, it’s almost time for the Sanlam Handmade Contemporary Fair on the rooftop of Hyde Park Corner Shopping centre from 14-16 October. We plan to bring you lots of our new products so get excited! It’s set to be one of the best local shopping events this year so make sure you don’t miss out.

And because we are so looking forward to the event, we are offering any of our lovely Joburg customers the option of ordering online and collecting at the event. We will wrap and pack your order for you so all you have to do is pop past and collect. Please note that you will need an entrance ticket to the event. We have added a “free collection at Handmade Contemporary” option at checkout so be sure to select that when placing your order.

We hope to see you there!

An invitation to a high fashion afternoon tea called “Act like a lady, think like a boss”…

The lovely ladies of funKtion are having a high fashion afternoon tea which is themed “Act like a lady, think like a boss”. And as I am an official sponsor : ) I thought I would spread the word and let you know about this lovely afternoon of networking on the 25 August, which includes cake…and tea… and did I mention cake??

High Tea InvitesThe aim of their event is for young women to inspire and empower other young women to be their own person, reach their full potential, find their passions and run with it. They salute the brave entrepreneurial spirit that we all share and are giving others a platform to proudly showcase their work to like minded individuals as well as to a new market. They are encouraging personal networking instead of being lectured to by one or two people. Everybody has something valuable to share.

Some of their sponsors include Amy Lauren Creations, Body Works Health & Beauty Salon, CL Styling House, Enmasse tea merchants, For Example décor, Handmade by Me, Lady Bonin, Madame Zingara, Media 24 and Simply Blush. All local businesses and all the girl power in one venue!

They plan to run many more initiatives like this as they believe that our generation of females/women should be helping each other climb to new levels, instead of standing on one another to get ahead.

funKtion is a proudly South African events management company that was
founded in May 2013. Both owners, Yasmin Schrueder & Candice Manuel, have
backgrounds in Interior Design and share a love for everything creative. They
pride ourselves in getting their work done timeously, professionally and in
excellence.

all aboard the week ahead…

And speaking of going to market, we have a great line-up of events happening over the next week! Magpie Motel‘s Durban pop up shop, Cape Town’s Decorex 2014, The Doilie Market in Durbanville, and our favourite, The Woodlands Market in Vredehoek! And what with Mother’s Day round the corner, there is no better time than now to do some last minute gift purchasing!

Kicking it all off from Wednesday 24th to Friday 26th, is the first Magpie Motel pop up shop held in Durban. Most of you may remember the awesome goodies on sale at their hilton venue, well now you can get all that and more, and a little closer to home…well for all the Durban folks anyways!

Final Durban mailer

Then very importantly we have Cape Town’s Decorex 2014, South Africa’s finest décor, design and lifestyle expo! It’s on at the CTICC and starts on Thursday 25th and runs until Sunday the 28th. I won’t be there personally but you can find a wide variety of handmade by me goodies on display at the CCDI collective stand. I am very much looking forward to being on the other side of the “table” for a change…

Then Saturday we are going to be doing our first Doilie Market at Poplars, D’Aria Winery in Durbanville. They seem to have got it right with cover in case it rains, heaters in case its cold and a huge play area to keep your kids entertained! And of course lots and lots of awesome things to buy! Its meant to be a beautiful day so we’re really looking forward to giving this a go…we hope you will pop in and say hi if you’re in the area: )

And finally on Monday 29th we will be back at our favourite Woodlands Market. I love this market, and its not because of the pizzas or the wine, but because you’re guaranteed to have a good time…and possibly indulge in a little retail therapy while you’re at it : )

Woodlands Blank dateAnd if you can’t make any of these, then you can always find something for Mother’s Day at the handmade by me online shop! I highly recommend the cup o tea chef apron which is guaranteed to brighten any tea lovers day : )

And its off to market we go…

Its going to be a very busy weekend for handmade by me. We are going to be participating in 3 different markets over the weekend. Firstly we will be taking part in our usual Bay Harbour Market all weekend long. And for the first time we will be joining the Lock Stock Market which is in conjunction with Die Plattelande food market at the Palms Lifestyle and Decor Centre on Saturday . And then on Sunday we will be joining the Blue Bird Garage Food and Goods Market in Muizenburg. There’s live music there and lots of wonderful things to buy and to eat, so come on by for some lunch. If the weather is great, all the markets will be worth a looksee as there is plenty of outdoor area to sun yourself and have an ice cold beer. If the weather is bad, everything is covered and you can come and escape the wind or the rain, or just to have a good time. I’ve heard really good things about these two new markets and am very excited to see what they are like to sell at. Here’s hoping we have a really successful weekend ahead! Don’t forget to come and say hi : )

And to get you ready for what you might find at the market, here are a few new available products to purchase…

Of course you can always get ahead of the crowds and shop online here.

Celebrate Home…

Earlier this year I was approached about doing some Handmade By Me advertising up for a new home magazine that was being created and launched in the United States called Celebrate Home Magazine. There was an article being written about a lady who had a collection of over 500 tea towels, and being a tea towel collector, maker and seller myself, how could I resist? Check out “Dish Towel Diva” on page 93. There was also a lot of support for young designers like myself to use this as a platform to get their products and ideas out there so I am really happy to help promote this gorgeous magazine, not to mention all the beautiful recipes, homewares and all kinds of great ideas it has inside.

Don’t forget to look out for the two Handmade By Me ads : ) I would love to hear what you all think???

Here is a link to download a free pdf of the mag and from here you can order a fully printed version should you like. Please feel free to send the link on to family and friends and enjoy!

The time has come for a magazine like this—highlighting ordinary people doing extraordinary things. No matter your budget, your skills or the size of your space, we’ll enthusiastically share experiences of those who nurture the space they call home. Let us inspire you!”

Flamin’ Flamingos!

For those of you who aren’t friends of handmade by me’s facebook page you might not know the exciting news yet! I am also delighted that this is my first and very happy post from sunny Cape Town. I received an email a few days ago to let me know that my Pink Flamingo! Cushion Cover has made it to the shortlist of 250 products from OVER 2 MILLION to be presented in the DaWanda Lovebook for Winter 2012-2013!!!

This is such exciting news for handmade by me as “the Lovebook is sent to journalists from across Europe, the US and Australasia, who may then select products for publication and publish them in magazines and newspapers. Products from previous Lovebooks were later published in Time magazine, Vogue, Gala, Brigitte and many other publications.”

Take a look at the Lovebook Summer 2012 here:

And for those of you who haven’t seen my Pink Flamingo! design here is the cushion cover and matching tea towel, and the design is also available in napkins…

Now lets hope this is the beginning of great things to come! I am working on some very exciting projects so as always…watch this space!
