Now available from… Meisie in Wales

I am delighted to let you all know about Handmade By Me’s latest stockist, Meisie, all the way in Wales in the UK. Not only do I just LOVE that name for a shop overseas featuring South African designers and products, but I also LOVE that they support and donate a percentage of their profits each year to charities like Save The Rhino InternationalAge UKDog’s Trust and SOS Children’s Villages. So not only are you buying beautiful things, but you are also contributing towards a brighter future for many people and animals too : )

Here is a little bit more about Meisie and what Cassandra Sprague, the owner, has to say about her lovely new shop:

“I started Meisie after realising that the UK and Europe needed to see some of the amazing things that my fellow countrymen and countrywomen are making. The idea of Meisie is to show you that Africa doesn’t just make wooden crafts; but has a wonderful collection of cultures that produce some amazing products and fashion. I hope you love the products as much as I do.” – Cassandra.

Based in Wales, we are pleased to offer everything from clothing to homeware, crafts and jewellery. We have a great mix of vintage, modern and quirky products to suit men, women and children and we’re adding products all the time. All of the products you see are ethical and unique, you certainly won’t find mass-produced items here.

All items are designed and manufactured in South Africa from locally sourced materials by local communities. Being supplied by small-scale entrepreneurs and community development projects, the idea is to create sustained employment where it is needed most.

And then I would like to introduce to you, Handmade by me’s latest online stockist, Petrichor Studio. Situated in the friendly city of Port Elizabeth, South Africa, Petrichor Studio is all about creating sustainable spaces for clients – in the home, the office and the garden. They offer a complete consultation and design service for interiors and gardens, and they have a lovely little online shop that compliments that all nicely.

“Michelle Hatherly has many years of garden design experience primarily using indigenous plants, as well as several years practice as an interior designer. She is passionate about sustainable and eco-friendly design and employs the “reduce, re-use, recycle” principles in her inspiring design of spaces.

Petrichor Studio has also evolved with the collaboration of Michelle and her photographer/designer daughter, Sasha Hatherly. They have considered creating an online store for some years, which would showcase the talents of local South African designers and artists.

Now a reality, the Store will ultimately ‘stock’ a range of handmade furniture, lighting, cushion covers and other accessories which are useful, durable, but which will also beautifully decorate home, office and garden, and create sustainable spaces to live and work in. Many will be cleverly re-purposed items, as well as those produced from recycled materials. A select range of indigenous bulbs and seeds grown by Petrichor Studio, will also be available to purchase in the Store.”

Here’s what owner Tracey Trevelyan has to say: “The ethos of the brand is about supporting local talent, job creation and social responsibility projects in South Africa. Small quantities are sourced and new fab things introduced continuously, so that Fab fans don’t get bored, and many local designers have a platform to showcase their products. So, if you like something buy it, before it is gone! There really is no reason to import anything, we have great talent and beautifully produced, great quality products right here.”

Blog-Post-1

It seems indigo blue is indeed the way to go this year as “classic blue and white goes contemporary”. I know Fab Things have a few of my indigo blue products in stock so pop down there if you’re looking for some on-trend inspiration : )

get your Christmas shop on…

So its been a busy last few weeks with my pop-up shop, The Shoestring Collective, officially closing its doors at Gardens Centre, Cape Town. It has been the most incredible experience of my life, and as sad as I am to see it go, I am delighted to finally be able to relax and unwind…and spend more time on Handmade By Me : )

For those of you who are not on facebook, I would like to introduce to you my Christmas Jumper Christmas range! With a huge norwegian scanda influence, as well as my missing of the infamous cheesy Christmas Jumper parties back in Dublin (it’s just too damn hot here!), I have designed and created a very wintery and northern-hemisphere-nostalgic Christmas pattern. The design is available in red and mint green, and I have made Christmas stockings (perfect gifts for little children), Christmas tea towels, Christmas aprons (made to order), and Christmas gift wrap. All available to buy from the Handmade By Me online shop and various other stockists : )

Its always a good day out there, and there will be lots of lovely designers joining me there! This will probably be the only market that I am going to be part of before Christmas, so I really hope to see you all there to toast an incredible year end, and hopefully a very exciting new year ahead!

Now available at…Veldt Deli in Glasgow!

Yay handmade by me is now available in Glasgow, Scotland!!! I am super delighted about this as Veldt Deli is the gorgeous creation by an old friend of mine who is South African and her Scottish husband. Veldt Deli is Glasgow’s only Scottish/South African fusion deli where they make their own home-made Boerewors, Biltong and have daily bakery specials such as Koeksisters, Malva Pudding, Melktart and Peppermint Fridge Tart. From what I’ve seen so far it looks unbelievably welcoming and delicious and I can’t wait to visit for myself and try one of their red espressos made with homegrown Rooibos tea with a side of milk tart and possibly a koeksister : )

Handmade By Me blog is 1 today : )

And I still can’t believe it! It feels like soooo long ago when I started this blog, even then I remembered thinking it probably won’t even last till then…I really can’t believe how far Handmade By Me, as a brand and as a business, has come since then. I went back and looked at some of the first blogposts I wrote, in one of them I said “Fabric designing and printing is something that really interests me and if I want to start making my own fabric for the cushions, I am also going to have to learn to sew them myself.” I laughed! Who would have thought then, that I would be where I am today! Then I laughed even more at the item I actually sewed ha ha!

Anyways I just want to thank everyone who follows my blog so much, I really appreciate the support and even if you are reading this for the first time, the fact that people come here and see whats going on and have a look at what I am doing means a lot to me.

And being the 1st day of year no 2, I couldn’t be prouder than to show you this article featured  in the November issue of South African Garden And Home. I still can’t believe that there’s a photo of me in there, but I feel really encouraged to continue with what I am doing, who knows where I’ll be in another year’s time.
