Introducing our new range of designs and products

So it’s taken us a little bit longer than we anticipated, but finally we are able to show you some of the product shots of Handmade By Me’s newest range of designs and products.

For the Prickly Pears and African Aloes range, we have introduced these designs across our full range of products including our beautiful LUX Panama Cushion Covers which we sold out of at Kamers recently.

We also teamed up these two designs with our Pretty Proteas and Striking Strelitzias designs to bring you our full Cape Floral Kingdom range.

The LUX panama cushion covers are our premium range of cushion covers made using our luxurious quality 100% cotton panama fabric. This fabric is thick and soft, and we have cushion covers available in 60x60cm, and 60x40cm on request. We can also supply you with feather/down inners on request.

We have also introduced a little something for our favourite teeny tiny little customers, Nappy Covers.  These have been made using our beautiful soft 100% cotton. They are available in 5 designs and in 4 sizes: 3-6 months, 6-12 months, 12-18 months and 18-24 months.

We are also very excited about our new reusable placemat designs, Birds of Paradise and Victoriana, which will be available alongside our Delft and Imari placemat designs in December. Please note that these are available to pre-order in the mean time.

Big 5 poster

You may have seen some pics of our Big 5 range for kids on our social media feeds lately. In Africa, the big five game animals are the African lion, African elephant, Cape buffalo, African leopard, and White/Black rhinoceros. The members of the Big Five were chosen for the difficulty in hunting them and the degree of danger involved, rather than their size.

The Big 5 range is available in 50x50cm cushion covers and reusable placemats at the moment, and we will hopefully be introducing these designs in the nappy covers shortly.

For the reusable placemats, each placemat has been laminated so you can use them over and over again, and then when you finally get sick of them you can turn them into face masks in just 3 easy steps. Each set of 5 contains one of each of the Big 5 animals. How fun would a kids party be with these guys!

To make sure that the placemats can easily be turned into face masks, I had to test them out and make a face mask out of each placemat design. Here’s how its done:

Kamers and The Constantia Gift Fair…

I would like to say a BIG THANK YOU to everyone who came to visit and supported us and Windowsill this last week at KAMERS. Despite the 40 degree heat on the first day, and the torrential storm that saw Kamers close its doors early on the last day, we really had such a wonderful time.

We launched our new Prickly Pears, African Aloes and Big 5 designs, as well as our new nappy covers, and we had our new Big 5 reusable placemats that turn into face masks on display. We are very busy editing all the new product photos this week, which we will share with you right here very soon, and we will be adding the new products to our online shop as soon as we can. In the meantime please email us if you would like to place an order.

Here are some of the photos we shared over the last week.

new designs on the way (sneak peek)

We are so unbelievably excited about our new designs that we just can’t wait to show you what we have been up to lately! We are still busy printing the fabric to make into various products, but here is a little sneak preview of the designs behind the products and what you can expect from us in the coming weeks. We are hoping to launch our new designs and products at Kamers in Stellenbosch from 27 October – 1 November.

Ever since I designed the Pretty Proteas and Striking Strelitzias patterns I have wanted to do another pattern using a similar South African-inspired, plant/flower-related geometric style pattern. I have thought about all kinds of different plants and flowers but finally decided to use the Aloe Ferox for inspiration, not only because it is indigenous to South Africa, but because it lends itself so well to the geometric style of the design and because it is just so bloody gorgeous! When I see one of these anywhere, it always makes me think of home.

I have been a little plant besotted of late (can you tell?), and the one plant that always makes me ooh and ah every time I see it or see a picture of it, is the Prickly Pear cactus. I also once found a super cute illustrated children’s book with a picture of a sad little prickly pear cactus on the front who spent the whole book looking for someone who would give him a hug – it still makes me smile every time I think of it.

Both these designs will be available in cushion covers, napkins and tea towels to start, and then eventually available in our full range of products.

For all the cool kids out there, I have designed a new Big 5 inspired range of prints. Something little more modern for today’s generation, but which still captures the beautiful bright colours and busyness that Africa is all about! Well here’s my take on our Big 5. These prints will be available in cushion covers, pillowcases and eventually nappy covers.

We hope you like what you see. The designs are all available for pre-order so please chat to us if you want to be the first to get your hands on these guys. We would also like to invite you to come and see our new designs and products at Kamers at Webersburg in Stellenbosch between 27 October and 1 November.

Save Our Rhinos with Forever Wild Rhino Protection Initiative

Some of you may already know about my Save Our Rhinos design I created a while back, where for all purchases of any products in this design, I have been donating 5% of all sales to www.stoprhinopoaching.com. I recently completed an order of Save Our Rhinos tea towels, bags and purses to sell in the gift shop of Sanbona Game Reserve, and because Sanbona is very special and very close to the hearts of me and my family, I have decided to donate the 5% of all sales from now on to The Wilderness Foundation’s Forever Wild Rhino Protection Initiative

Forever Wild Rhino Protection Initiative was established in May 2011 in response to the increasing rhino poaching crises. This Initiative supports conservation agencies and organized private game reserves, which includes Sanbona and Shamwari Game Reserve, in protecting their rhino as part of a functioning natural ecosystem. It also aims to focus the attention of politicians and decision-makers and encourage them to apply pressure both nationally and abroad to address the issue of illegal trade in rhino horn and other wildlife products.

It may not be much, but I am very happy to say that at least Handmade By Me is doing something to help stop this awful tragedy!  Not only by trying to create (a little bit of) international awareness about this problem by talking and blogging about it, but by also contributing toward a fund which plans to actually DO something about it.

For more information about this initiative and how to donate to it, please see below, or have a look at their website www.foreverwild.co.za. Or support Handmade By Me AND Forever Wild Rhino Protection Initiative together by buying lots of lovely Save Our Rhinos products from The Handmade By Me Online Shop : )

The Wilderness Foundation launched the Forever Wild Rhino Protection Initiative in May, 2011. The campaign aims to gather support from the public and various stakeholders to help fight against rhino poaching in South Africa and save the rhino from extinction in the wild. The Wilderness Foundation believes that without the intervention of government and the public, the rhino may be extinct within the next ten years.

The foundation is involved in supporting conservation agencies and organized private game reserves in their efforts to protect their rhino populations through on-the-ground anti-poaching activities and investigations. It is also active in lobbying local and international governments for support in anti-poaching campaigns.

The highly effective Forever Wild Rhino Protection Initiative was given a boost in June 2011 through the sponsorship of six Volkswagen Amarok bakkies from Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles. The vehicles were allocated to various reserves and anti-poaching units across the country, each managed by the Forever Wild head office team. These vehicles have been replaced by VW with new vehicles and the contract renewed in June 2013, for a further 12 months.

From June 2011 to June 2013, the teams supported by the Forever Wild Initiative were involved in the arrest of over 80 suspected poachers, over 20 firearms confiscated, recovery of 7 rhino horn, hundreds of extended patrols in parks around the country, several rhino notching exercises, the translocation of a number of rhino for safety reasons, and many public awareness events.
