And we’re back…

We’re finally back from the BEST honeymoon travel adventure in the world ever!!! Sorry it has taken me so long to put this blogpost together, but we were thrown straight into the madness of Kamers my first week back and only now are we slowly getting back to our normal and usually chaotic working selves.

Firstly, thank you so much to everyone who came and visited and supported us at Kamers this past weekend. We were lucky enough to be sharing our space with the most stylish plants and flowers in the business, thanks to the lovely Windowsill. The City Hall was the most beautiful venue and we really had the best time meeting lots of lovely people and seeing all the wonderful things that were on offer. In case you missed it, here are some pics of the Handmade By Me + Windowsill stand. And below are some links to a few blogposts about what you could find at this year’s Kamers market in Cape Town.

Then back to our wonderful amazing honeymoon travel adventure holiday! I have tried to write this post several times since our arrival back home and it just does not seem possible to capture the unbelievable time that we had into a few words and photos. We travelled to 5 different countries, we learned new languages, ate new foods, drank new drinks, saw new things, met new people, and basically just had the BEST time together.

We eagerly explored the streets, restaurants, shops and galleries, and fell in love with New York. We were blown away by the street art and rooftop views in Valparaiso, Chile. We were bewildered by the ever changing landscape as we drove over the top of the Andes from Chile to Argentina in the front of a double decker bus (this was one of the highlights of our trip). We sipped the best wines paired with the best foods with a view of the highest snow capped mountain in South America in Mendoza, Argentina. We spent a week exploring the incredibly colourful and crazy city of Buenos Aires while sipping on giant beers, quaffing bottles of perfect Malbec and devouring all the best local cuisine we could find. We popped over on the ferry to Uruguay to explore the picturesque and very colonial smuggler’s haven of Colonia Del Sacramento. We experienced the most mesmerising and all-conquering Igwazu Falls from both the top and underneath. We experienced the overwhelming and truly crazy excitement of Brazilian futebol in Rio De Janeiro, where we fell in love with the views, the culture, the beaches and the people. And for the perfect end to the perfect holiday, we got to sail and swim and laze around on the wild picture perfect Brazilian coastline in Paraty. It was the adventure of a lifetime which truly superseded our highest expectations.

Here are a few photos which I have selected to try and capture a little piece of each place we went to. I have hundreds of pics so if you would like to see more of our wonderful journey (with commentary), you are most welcome to stalk my instagram account @seraholland.

You and me and the WDC…

You may remember a few weeks back, we invited you to the launch of a little project on Long Street called WDC 2014 POP-UP SPACE #WDC008. We are involved because we have a few of our products available to purchase from their shop which is one of the many interesting and exciting things one can find going on there. Check out the information below, along with their link, and either pop in and see what it’s all about, and/or spread the word so others can too.

“This space in 150 Long serves as a central location for the public to engage with WDC2014 projects.  The space is being designed to include as many projects as possible. The inside contains a mushroom farm transforming coffee waste from Cape Town cafe’s into plant food, a shop featuring a selection of products by designers, an WDC information hub, a mobile food cafe, a mini pop-up shop offering a retail opportunity to designers and projects that don’t currently have access to retail space, and an area where people can sit, eat and work with free wifi. We have Jade De Waal doing the culinary vibes and then Department of Coffee from khayelitsha doing the hot beverages.”

We are off to Kamers at the castle this week along with our favourite (art, ceramics, textiles, furniture, antiques) design studio and shop Chandler House : )

For those of you who don’t already know, Kamers is a design, food, wine and live music pop-up retail event, essentially a big fancy market, which is usually hosted once a year in different parts of the country. But this year in conjunction with the CCDI and World Design Capital Cape Town 2014, they will be hosting their first pop-up at the Castle of Good Hope in Cape Town. What a sensational and seemingly appropriate venue!!! I can’t wait to see whats going on down there this weekend. You can find us and all sorts of Handmade By me products at the Chandler House space, which I am sure will be pretty spectacular! Pop in and say hi when are there!

Chandler House will not only be stocking Handmade By Me at Kamers, but you will also find some of our lovely things available to buy from their design studio and shop on 53 Church Street, Cape Town. Now seriously, if you haven’t had a chance to pop in and see Michael Chandler’s treasure trove of a space, Chandler House, already, you are indeed missing out! Amongst his own seriously beautiful works of art, my favourites being the Phrenology vases and VOC plates, which we also bought and used for our wedding (and now home), there are all kinds of other very talented designers and artists (mostly ceramicists) who’s beautiful works of art can be found displayed together alongside all kinds of bits and bobs that Michael has collected over the years including old paintings, furniture and antiques. The shop is filled with all kinds of nods towards Cape Heritage, and you will find it VERY hard to pop in, look around and leave empty handed!

Now just before you race down to Church street to take in this awesome hidden gem of a sight, Chandler House will be closed from the 3rd to the 10th of June as they move a few rooms around and give the shop a little bit of a revival. We will all be looking forward to the unveiling in July when they will also be hosting their first exhibition in the shop…very exciting!!!

You can find them at www.chandlerhouse.co.za and follow them on twitter: @MrChandlerHouse and facebook: www.facebook.com/chandlerhouse

And here are some lovely photos of the shop which I stole from their facebook page : )

get your Christmas shop on…

So its been a busy last few weeks with my pop-up shop, The Shoestring Collective, officially closing its doors at Gardens Centre, Cape Town. It has been the most incredible experience of my life, and as sad as I am to see it go, I am delighted to finally be able to relax and unwind…and spend more time on Handmade By Me : )

For those of you who are not on facebook, I would like to introduce to you my Christmas Jumper Christmas range! With a huge norwegian scanda influence, as well as my missing of the infamous cheesy Christmas Jumper parties back in Dublin (it’s just too damn hot here!), I have designed and created a very wintery and northern-hemisphere-nostalgic Christmas pattern. The design is available in red and mint green, and I have made Christmas stockings (perfect gifts for little children), Christmas tea towels, Christmas aprons (made to order), and Christmas gift wrap. All available to buy from the Handmade By Me online shop and various other stockists : )

Speaking of stockists, I am really delighted to let you all know about an amazing new South African designer shop called SAM (South African Market) which will be opening its doors on Bree Street later in the week. I will have a full range of Handmade By Me products available to buy there, and as far as I know there are a lot of pretty awesome designers involved, which means a lot of pretty awesome things to buy! Here is a link to their facebook page and their website will be live very soon!

I also want to let you all know that I will be at The Treasury Market‘s Christmas market in Stellenbosch this coming Saturday. Its always a good day out there, and there will be lots of lovely designers joining me there! This will probably be the only market that I am going to be part of before Christmas, so I really hope to see you all there to toast an incredible year end, and hopefully a very exciting new year ahead!

Christmas is finally here…

Christmas is here and finally I am starting to see it everywhere now. In Ireland it has probably already been Christmassy for a month or two already. They even have a radio channel called Christmas FM which plays non-stop Christmas carols throughout November and December. Hilarious and annoying at the same time : ) As much as it gets icy cold over there I do miss it this time of the year as it really is so festive and fun. Its a little harder to get festive in the blaring South African heat but we certainly try!

First off with my Christmassy items this year is a wreath I made for Woman & Home magazine. I guess in hindsight I should have made something more sellable, but they asked me to do something different and exciting and so how could I say no! After making all those origami birds from The Shoestring Collective‘s window display, I decided to give paper, rather than fabric, another go! And voila here is my wreath. Its a little hard to tell from the pic, but I used pieces of shiny copper card, some printed designs of my own, and some images of covers of old Christmas stories and books to create the colourful and christmassy theme throughout the wreath. It really was quite simple to do, definitely something that would entertain all those festive crafters out there!

And while I’m in the Christmas spirit please join us for our 10 day Christmas Pop-Up at The Shoestring Collective. Gardens Centre have found a new tenant for our space, so until we find a new home we will be closed from the 1st December. But who loves Christmas shopping in December anyways? Its a nightmare! We will be offering you exclusive items that you can’t get anywhere else, there will be all things Christmassy like stockings, decorations and gift wrap, as well as awesome gift ideas for men, women and children, and the very best “merry Christmas to me” presents : )

With all that in mind, it’s a great idea to do your Christmas shopping early this year and support the best of local and handmade at The Shoestring Collective.

South African inspirations available in store…

I would like to start off by thanking everyone who came and supported Handmade By Me at the Constantia Gift Fair this last week. We had a disastrously rainy and windy start on Wednesday morning, but by Friday everything was well under way, and it turned out to be a very enjoyable and successful week.

Now I know I have introduced my new South African inspired range to you before (for those of you missed the previous post click here), but I wanted to share the photos from the product shoot that I did. They all sold so well at the Constantia Gift Fair, and make really great gifts for friends and family overseas as they are super easy to post. The cushion covers are available filled or on their own. Chat to me about sending gifts overseas for you, I have designed some beautiful Christmas gift wrap and will be offering a gift wrap and post service from now until Christmas.

Available now from The Shoestring Collective Pop-Up Shop and The Handmade By Me Online Shop, and various other stockists : )
