New year, new work.

Happy new year and a warm welcome back to you all! Here’s hoping your 2020 is already off to a great start.

As most of you know, last year was a big change for me, trying to make my business more about design rather than production, and even though the lines are still often blurred, I feel like we are heading in the right direction.

This year I would like to try and take on some more exciting design jobs, so if you know of anyone looking, please send them my way, or send on their details. Here is a link to my online design portfolio. First prize would really be to partner up with a client or small business who needs regular ongoing work 2-3 days a week, basically something to pay the bills so I can continue with my other creative work in the meantime. But this might be hard to find, so I am just putting it out there to see.

Here are some of my favourite design projects and highlights from 2019. Please click on the main images and links to find out more about any of them if you are interested.

Of all the projects I did last year, this has to be my favourite! It is also something I have always wanted to do. I created a Delft plate inspired illustration for a carpet for The Tasting Room at Vergenoegd Low Wine Farm outside Stellenbosch in Cape Town, South Africa.

The brief was to create a unique Cape Dutch style plate illustration inspired by the landscape and traditions of Vergenoegd Wine Farm. The illustration incorporates the original Vergenoegd Cape Dutch homestead and it’s infamous Indian Runner Ducks who help keep the farm pesticide and pest free, which is also represented by the snail who indicates a healthy farm, the grape vines of course which are used to make their famous wines, the local Robin Chat who represents a fertile farm, and all the beautiful indigenous and local blooms found in and around the farm such as the Protea, Bladder Hibiscus, Arum Lily, Aandblom, Moraea, Angustifolia, Marguerite, Oxalis, Peacock flower, Sour Fig, Romulea Hirsuta amongst others…

I designed a logo, identity and branding for a nail, brow and lash bar called Briyé.

I designed a range of bespoke products for well known ceramicist Anthony Shapiro for his Ant + Linda COLLECT ceramic range.

For the designs, we shot the ceramic patterns which had been carved into the clay so you can see the handmade marks and natural texture of the carving on the fired clay, and turned them into repeat patterns to be printed and used on the various products.

I created some placemats for Spier Wine Farm in Cape Town, South Africa, for their farm-to-table restaurant called EIGHT. They are well known for their ethical farm-sourced produce, and for their chickens!

I made some placemats to go with an overseas customer’s collection of Minton’s Cockatrice plates.

I designed a foliage inspired pattern for some fabric for a customer who wanted to make her own dress for a special event.

I created two different designs for fabric for a client looking to start her own fashion range.

The first brief was to create an “indian block print” looking design which had to incorporate something floral (ideally local) and a bee. I used a South African flower called a Wurmbea Elatior, also known as a salt & pepper flower, and created this repeat pattern below.

I was then asked to create another pattern to compliment, but also offset the first design. This time the brief was to include beehives and/or beehomes as well as the same bee.

We created a peaock inspired print for a client starting their own range of home decor products.

We also added some new products to the range we currently make for The Trading Co at Spice Route and The Yard

Wishing you all a happy, healthy and creative year ahead.

media love

While we are busy painting and sanding and getting our new shop ready (which is just so unbelievably exciting), we thought we would share some of the fantastic media love we have received over the past few weeks.

Your Family magazine chose our Birds in Paradise placemats as one of their suggested ways to be kinder to the planet. Our collection of earth-friendly, recyclable and reusable placemats were created with this exact purpose in mind.

And even though it’s not technically media love, we thought we would share this photo of our small lampshades getting ready for an order which we shared last week. Aren’t they just the cutest!

Living and Loving magazine looked at choosing which colours will work best for your nursey and decided our Orange Squares cushion cover would be a perfect match.  “While red is a fiery, volatile and energetic colour that should only be used as an accent colour in small amounts in a nursery, orange offers a similar look that’s friendly, welcoming and vibrant.”

Happy new year errrrr’body!!! Its back to work for most of you this week, so we thought we’d save our happy cheery new year blog post for now rather than last week when most of you were still sipping cocktails on a beach somewhere : ) New years bring new designs, new products, new friends, new collaborations and hopefully lots of exciting new adventures…which, I am delighted to say, we are already in the process of creating….so, as always, watch this space!

I am delighted to let you all know that our Cape Town and Elephants designs are now available as tote bags? Totes amaze? We know….and just cannot stop using that expression!! Our not-so-heartfelt apologies!! : ) We launched them at Kamers at the Castle this last weekend and they flew off the shelves.

Totes

They are R320 each and are available from the Handmade By Me online shop, Hello Pretty, Chandler House, and more stockists coming soon.

Speaking of Kamers, thanks so much to everyone who popped in to the absolutely gorgeous Chandler House space to say hi and support us. We had the best time and still cannot get over how absolutely beautiful the Castle was as the venue to host this. What an honour to be a part of something so unique! Some of you may have seen these already but here are a few (slighty blurry) sneak peeks of our products at work. (I only wish I had taken more!)

you and me and thursdays…

I am sure most of you know about First Thursdays Cape Town, but do you know about Third Thursdays Cape Town? Third Thursdays is the East city edition of First Thursdays, where you can explore Cape Town’s East city after hours for an evening of art, culture and great food.  Art galleries and stores stay open until until 9pm. One of the places you really shouldn’t miss is ANOUK Furniture and Decor situated below the Perspectives building in Roeland Street. ANOUK offers an eclectic mix of affordable furniture and décor – old and new – catering for those in need of both basic and indulgent pieces. I was in there yesterday and there are some really beautiful pieces of antique furniture available selling at really good prices. Not only do they make a bit of a fuss for Third Thursdays by having various designers showcasing their products in the shop, but they have wine…and fun…and from this Third Thursdays onwards they will also be stocking our decorative placemats. I have attached a copy of the map for this Third Thursdays 22 May. ANOUK is no 12.

And while I’m going on about our lovely decorative placemats, this week’s YOU magazine is also giving them some love in their “We Love” feature as part of their Lifestyle section.

Firstly I would just like to thank everyone who entered the SA Decor & Design and Handmade By Me Mother’s Day giveaway!!! And then I would like to introduce to you one of Handmade By Me’s latest stockist’s, KIN. Most of you may remember them as the Fringe Arts, one of the original shops to stock only local and handmade products in Cape Town, but they have since changed their name to KIN. For those of you who don’t know them already, they offer a wide range of beautiful South African designed and produced jewellery, bags, decor, ceramics, prints, books, toys, cards etc and are one of the best places around to spend a bit of time looking for that perfect gift. They also have an online shop : )

KIN Kloof - overview

KIN showcases a quirky and colourful offering of designer jewellery, décor, ceramics, art-prints and stationery. Passionately advocating keeping craftsmanship in South Africa, the collection focuses exclusively on local art and design – highlighting the country’s unique creative edge. Every piece is conceptualised and made in SA, with the aim of utilising and supporting local industries as well as contributing to a sustainable creative market.

Launching at the Spier Contemporary Exhibition at the Cape Town City Hall in 2010, KIN began as series of pop-up shops which aimed to create a bridge between South African design and art, and those who have fallen in love with it. The attention of both customers and potential designers was caught, and KIN’s carefully-curated offering has grown to include two physical stores  (one in bustling Kloof Street and one at the V&A Waterfront) as well as an online store. The stores offer a feast of contemporary design, and are supported and celebrated by locals and internationals alike (KIN was recently featured in The Lonely Planet’s Top Choice in Shopping in Cape Town).

What KIN offers goes beyond the material in connecting local artists to a public which is growing more conscious of the importance of where something comes from and why it was made.

You can follow them on twitter @kinshopsa and on facebook: https://www.facebook.com/kinshopct
