Exciting news…and the final farewell!

Exciting news! I have a new website to house all the weird and wonderful creative things that I want to do going forward. And I would love to share it with you.

As you know things have been evolving since I closed my business a couple of years ago now. The focus was to be more on design and less on production, and it certainly took a little while to figure out exactly what I wanted to offer the world. And then, just when things were picking up, Covid arrived, and everything changed all over again. And while I have never been so relieved not to have a physical retail store, or team of staff to look after, I lost quite a few amazing design opportunities which was hard. But in losing those projects, and with a strict lockdown in place, I had the luxury of time and the incredible opportunity to pursue my passion of painting, which I hadn’t done since my school days. It took a nation of starving people to force me out of my comfort zone, to offer paintings to the public in exchange for donations to charity, but 30+ paintings later, I can honestly say it has been the most incredible experience, and I only want to do more.

So now that I am half designer and half artist, I have finally created a portfolio of work to showcase what I can and want to do more of going forward. These are the things I am super passionate about, and would love to collaborate on.

Prints and patterns – I love nothing more than making pretty things. The power of a striking image or pattern is completely limitless and can often totally transform a brand. Design is my passion and whether you have a product or business in mind, I would love to help. See my surface pattern & product design portfolio here

Products (Handmade By Me) – I will still be offering fabric and wallpaper printing on demand, as well as a limited range of trays, placemats and hotel slippers, but only on a wholesale basis. Some Handmade By Me designs will be available, but I would love to create you your own unique range. Please enquire for more information.

Branding – Graphic Design was always my OG, but branding is something I get a little more excited about. Whether it’s a logo, illustration or social content, I can help you create or roll out out a look or campaign. See my graphic design & illustration portfolio here.

You can also view all my paintings and various ceramics from over the years, including the full range of #coronacommissionspostcardseries, and if you are interested in buying any of my paintings, I have created a list of available work here. Commissions are welcome.

While I am very excited about the future, this sadly means the final farewell for Handmade By Me, and I hope that you will continue to follow my creative journey over at www.seraholland.co.za. I am going to totally assume that you would like to be kept up-to-date with news as I go : ) so I am going to add you to my new newsletter. Please feel free to unsubscribe.

Its been 10 years since I started the Handmade By Me blog and it has given me so much joy! From starting off with soup recipes (you should check them out, they’re actually really good) and learning how to sew, to becoming a fully operational business, thank you to every single person here for being a part of my crazy journey!

I hope to see you on the other side!

Sera

New year, new work.

Happy new year and a warm welcome back to you all! Here’s hoping your 2020 is already off to a great start.

As most of you know, last year was a big change for me, trying to make my business more about design rather than production, and even though the lines are still often blurred, I feel like we are heading in the right direction.

This year I would like to try and take on some more exciting design jobs, so if you know of anyone looking, please send them my way, or send on their details. Here is a link to my online design portfolio. First prize would really be to partner up with a client or small business who needs regular ongoing work 2-3 days a week, basically something to pay the bills so I can continue with my other creative work in the meantime. But this might be hard to find, so I am just putting it out there to see.

Here are some of my favourite design projects and highlights from 2019. Please click on the main images and links to find out more about any of them if you are interested.

Of all the projects I did last year, this has to be my favourite! It is also something I have always wanted to do. I created a Delft plate inspired illustration for a carpet for The Tasting Room at Vergenoegd Low Wine Farm outside Stellenbosch in Cape Town, South Africa.

The brief was to create a unique Cape Dutch style plate illustration inspired by the landscape and traditions of Vergenoegd Wine Farm. The illustration incorporates the original Vergenoegd Cape Dutch homestead and it’s infamous Indian Runner Ducks who help keep the farm pesticide and pest free, which is also represented by the snail who indicates a healthy farm, the grape vines of course which are used to make their famous wines, the local Robin Chat who represents a fertile farm, and all the beautiful indigenous and local blooms found in and around the farm such as the Protea, Bladder Hibiscus, Arum Lily, Aandblom, Moraea, Angustifolia, Marguerite, Oxalis, Peacock flower, Sour Fig, Romulea Hirsuta amongst others…

I designed a logo, identity and branding for a nail, brow and lash bar called Briyé.

I designed a range of bespoke products for well known ceramicist Anthony Shapiro for his Ant + Linda COLLECT ceramic range.

For the designs, we shot the ceramic patterns which had been carved into the clay so you can see the handmade marks and natural texture of the carving on the fired clay, and turned them into repeat patterns to be printed and used on the various products.

I created some placemats for Spier Wine Farm in Cape Town, South Africa, for their farm-to-table restaurant called EIGHT. They are well known for their ethical farm-sourced produce, and for their chickens!

I made some placemats to go with an overseas customer’s collection of Minton’s Cockatrice plates.

I designed a foliage inspired pattern for some fabric for a customer who wanted to make her own dress for a special event.

I created two different designs for fabric for a client looking to start her own fashion range.

The first brief was to create an “indian block print” looking design which had to incorporate something floral (ideally local) and a bee. I used a South African flower called a Wurmbea Elatior, also known as a salt & pepper flower, and created this repeat pattern below.

I was then asked to create another pattern to compliment, but also offset the first design. This time the brief was to include beehives and/or beehomes as well as the same bee.

We created a peaock inspired print for a client starting their own range of home decor products.

We also added some new products to the range we currently make for The Trading Co at Spice Route and The Yard

Wishing you all a happy, healthy and creative year ahead.

What we’re up to…

It has been a little while since we made the decision to close our doors and make some changes to our little business, and I thought maybe it was time for an update, as you may be wondering what we have been up to lately, or possibly where we are going.

Life sometimes has a way of deciding things for you even though you think you know better, and as much as we have spent most of our time wrapping up handmade by me and selling off all our last stock, as well as enjoying a small break, the demand for our products is still going strong. And so, with that in mind, we have decided to keep our wholesale orders open for a little while longer. Our online shop will continue to sell our fabrics and wallpapers, but anyone looking for any other products will need to purchase directly from our list of stockists.

We have also been very fortunate to have had some exciting bespoke design projects on the go. Amongst others, we made slippers for Ellerman House and introduced tote bags to the range of products we previously created for Klein Constantia, and we have a number of other exciting opportunities still in progress or in the pipeline. This for me has been very serendipitous, as well as creatively rewarding,  and I am very excited to see where it goes.

If you’re still not sure what the hell we’re doing, or maybe you’re wondering how we can work together, these are our core services on offer below.

Design Service

Handmade By Me has extensive experience in designing and developing prints and patterns that can be applied to any surface including apparel, home furnishing, wall decor, gift items, accessories and paper goods.

We also offer a full graphic design service from logos and branding to newsletters and web banners.

If you are looking for any graphic or pattern/graphic design assistance, or possibly a design collaboration (which we LOVE), please email us for more info and rates.

Design & Product Service

We offer a custom design and print service on all our available fabrics and wallpapers. Whether you have a design in mind, or if you need design assistance, we can have the products printed for you.

We also assist other businesses with designing, creating and producing bespoke ranges of high quality locally-made products that are unique to them. Some of our clients include The Trading Store at Spice Route, Klein Constantia, Ellerman House and Singita Game Reserve.

If you are a hotel or shop looking to have some bespoke products made specially for you please email us for more info.

Here are some custom projects we have worked on previously.

Wholesale orders

If you are interested in stocking some of our products, please email us for a catalogue and wholesale price list. Please note minimums do apply and we do not offer products on consignment.

Online shop

Our fabric and wallpaper are still readily available to order online. And we still have a few more items left on sale if anyone is looking for any last-minute bargains.

And if you are a customer looking to purchase any of our products specifically, we would be happy to point you in the direction of your nearest stockist.
