ORIKAMI is a specialty concept store inspired by the ideals of traditional Japanese origami. The brand’s name is rooted in Japanese language: “ori” meaning folding, and “kami” meaning paper.

We source unique, handcrafted products from both new and established designers around the world to bring you specially made items in one convenient location.

Orikami is the only store where you can shop for a variety of origami-inspired products, offering a judiciously selected mix of accessories, furniture, décor, gadgets, and nursery items.

The store’s signature is based upon the values of minimalism. We look to the clean, sharp lines of origami and aim to bring that same form of simplicity into our lives. Our Orikami picks bring art into your home or office space, while remaining to be one of the most unique pieces you will own.”

Now available from…Chandler House… and Kamers

We are off to Kamers at the castle this week along with our favourite (art, ceramics, textiles, furniture, antiques) design studio and shop Chandler House : )

10406938_781720745180478_6018018976556261912_n

For those of you who don’t already know, Kamers is a design, food, wine and live music pop-up retail event, essentially a big fancy market, which is usually hosted once a year in different parts of the country. But this year in conjunction with the CCDI and World Design Capital Cape Town 2014, they will be hosting their first pop-up at the Castle of Good Hope in Cape Town. What a sensational and seemingly appropriate venue!!! I can’t wait to see whats going on down there this weekend. You can find us and all sorts of Handmade By me products at the Chandler House space, which I am sure will be pretty spectacular! Pop in and say hi when are there!

1001358_591743400846289_724911815_n

Chandler House will not only be stocking Handmade By Me at Kamers, but you will also find some of our lovely things available to buy from their design studio and shop on 53 Church Street, Cape Town. Now seriously, if you haven’t had a chance to pop in and see Michael Chandler’s treasure trove of a space, Chandler House, already, you are indeed missing out! Amongst his own seriously beautiful works of art, my favourites being the Phrenology vases and VOC plates, which we also bought and used for our wedding (and now home), there are all kinds of other very talented designers and artists (mostly ceramicists) who’s beautiful works of art can be found displayed together alongside all kinds of bits and bobs that Michael has collected over the years including old paintings, furniture and antiques. The shop is filled with all kinds of nods towards Cape Heritage, and you will find it VERY hard to pop in, look around and leave empty handed!

Now just before you race down to Church street to take in this awesome hidden gem of a sight, Chandler House will be closed from the 3rd to the 10th of June as they move a few rooms around and give the shop a little bit of a revival. We will all be looking forward to the unveiling in July when they will also be hosting their first exhibition in the shop…very exciting!!!

You can find them at www.chandlerhouse.co.za and follow them on twitter: @MrChandlerHouse and facebook: www.facebook.com/chandlerhouse

And here are some lovely photos of the shop which I stole from their facebook page : )

you and me and thursdays…

I am sure most of you know about First Thursdays Cape Town, but do you know about Third Thursdays Cape Town? Third Thursdays is the East city edition of First Thursdays, where you can explore Cape Town’s East city after hours for an evening of art, culture and great food.  Art galleries and stores stay open until until 9pm. One of the places you really shouldn’t miss is ANOUK Furniture and Decor situated below the Perspectives building in Roeland Street. ANOUK offers an eclectic mix of affordable furniture and décor – old and new – catering for those in need of both basic and indulgent pieces. I was in there yesterday and there are some really beautiful pieces of antique furniture available selling at really good prices. Not only do they make a bit of a fuss for Third Thursdays by having various designers showcasing their products in the shop, but they have wine…and fun…and from this Third Thursdays onwards they will also be stocking our decorative placemats. I have attached a copy of the map for this Third Thursdays 22 May. ANOUK is no 12.

And while I’m going on about our lovely decorative placemats, this week’s YOU magazine is also giving them some love in their “We Love” feature as part of their Lifestyle section.

They offer a complete consultation and design service for interiors and gardens, and they have a lovely little online shop that compliments that all nicely.

“Michelle Hatherly has many years of garden design experience primarily using indigenous plants, as well as several years practice as an interior designer. She is passionate about sustainable and eco-friendly design and employs the “reduce, re-use, recycle” principles in her inspiring design of spaces.

Petrichor Studio has also evolved with the collaboration of Michelle and her photographer/designer daughter, Sasha Hatherly. They have considered creating an online store for some years, which would showcase the talents of local South African designers and artists.

Now a reality, the Store will ultimately ‘stock’ a range of handmade furniture, lighting, cushion covers and other accessories which are useful, durable, but which will also beautifully decorate home, office and garden, and create sustainable spaces to live and work in. Many will be cleverly re-purposed items, as well as those produced from recycled materials. A select range of indigenous bulbs and seeds grown by Petrichor Studio, will also be available to purchase in the Store.”

Go on, check out their full website here www.petrichorstudio.com.

recreate with handmade by me

Recreate is a cutting edge interior design range of repurposed furniture and lighting, started by Katie Thompson in 2009.

Using pieces of discarded junk, Katie recreates a unique, recycled range of furniture, lighting and interior accessories, each piece infused with its own previous character but with a new function. By blending South African craftsmanship, with high end finishes and her own eclectic perfectionist flair, Katie creates an original end product with a new integrity that epitomizes the very best of South African design.

Katie has a beautiful shop you can browse in opposite the biscuit mill in woodstock, or you can supply her with your own pieces of furniture/random items/anything and she can turn them into beautiful new desirable pieces for your home. A selection of handmade by me fabrics are available for this, and I can’t stop dreaming of my fly away birds fabric on the inside of an old suitcase, or even covering one of her famous suitcase chairs! sigh!

Anyways definitley pop in to her shop or check out her website, she has and does everything you can imagine…and more!!
