Summer update…‚ėÄūüź†ūüć¶ūüĆĽ‚ö°ūüĒ•

Hooray, summer is finally on its way, and so I thought it might be time for a little Handmade By Me update.

I can’t¬†believe it has been so long since our last post, but while it may look like things¬†have been very quiet on¬†the outside, there has actually been a whole lot going on on¬†the inside.¬†But with that being said, there is one small issue and that is that the only¬†problem with creating products for others and not for yourself, is that you¬†don’t get to choose when the projects get launched, or even if they get launched, or when you can show some¬†sneak peeks of what you are working on. So while we have been working on some seriously exciting projects behind the scenes, we have absolutely nothing that we can show you just yet!

What I can tell you, is that I have been working on some some exciting fashion brands creating and developing new designs for fabric, and then also helping others with developing existing designs into patterns and getting them ready to print. And we are also working on a few more custom designs and products for some lovely local restaurants, retailers and interior designers.

On a completely different note, I have also been really busy frantically working on a little collaboration I am doing with Anthony Shapiro, master of clay and wheel thrower extraordinaire : ) for Sanlam Handmade Contemporary Fair, an amazing design show which is on in Joburg this weekend. I am not sure if you are familiar with my pottery work, you may have seen some pics on my instagram feed, but Anthony has given me some of his bowls and vases that I have decorated using my favourite technique called Sgraffito, a form of decoration made by scratching through a surface to reveal a lower layer of a contrasting colour. Those who know me well will know to expect to see lots of foliage and lots of florals.

If you live in Joburg and have not been to this show do yourself a favour and go check it out, it is really one of my favourite shows with all the best of the best of South African and African design! We were lucky enough to be a part of it a couple of years ago and we loved every minute.

The show is on from 12-14 October on the rooftop of Hyde Park Shopping Centre. Look out out for COLLECT by Anthony Shapiro in the Homeware Pavilion, and click here for more info about the show.

Then just a little side note that our online shop is still open for any fabric and wallpaper orders. I am so happy to see this part of our business is still doing so well.

And for any of our lovely stockists out there, just a small reminder that Christmas is around the corner (like I really need to remind you; )) so you might want to get those wholesale orders in as soon as possible.

I am happy to say that we still have a lovely bunch of retailers still carrying our products so if you are after some of our goodies please check out our list of stockists.

Hope to see you back here with some pics of what’s been going on, but until then, wishing you all a wonderful week ahead.

Invite to the launch of BIOTICA

ShopBanner_BIOTICA

Please join us for the soft launch of our new range, BIOTICA, at the Handmade By Me + Windowsill shop on Wednesday 31 May 2017. We will be open from 11am Р7pm in the evening, so please pop by any time.

BIOTICA means relating to or resulting from living organisms. While having surrounded ourselves with the leaves, flowers and cuttings of the most beautiful plants over the past year, largely thanks to Windowsill, we didn’t have to go too far to¬†find inspiration for our new range.

For those of you who live in other parts of the country, BIOTICA will be live and available to order online from Wednesday.

Here is a sneak peek of what has been happening behind the scenes on our Instagram feed and what you can expect to see on Wednesday.

Please feel free to bring your friends and spread the word.

I hope to see you there!

We are VERY excited to invite you to our very own late night shopping evening at the Handmade By me + Windowsill studio/showroom/shop next week Thursday 8 December.

hmbmws_latenightshoppinginvite

We are also offering free gift wrapping on any orders from our online shop. Feel free to browse our product range from the comfort of your own home, order and pay online, email me what you would like to have gift wrapped, and then collect your order from our retail store (we have parking) at your convenience.

We have been so fortunate to have had such wonderful media love this November that we have decided to turn it into a kind of gift guide of sorts. See what some of SA’s finest media thinks of some of our products.

Food & Home magazine chose¬†our online shop as the Editor’s Pick in their¬†round up of¬†favourite online shops.

Fair Lady magazine looked to nature this month with some lovely gift ideas inspired by floral and foliage. So happy to see our Prickly Pears tea towel made the cut.

Plascon Spaces magazine used our Geometric Navy and our Prickly Pears cushions in their latest Spring issue. See if you can spot our Geo Navy cushion on the cover : )

We also discovered our Delft Plate Placemats featured in this beautiful table setting in Plascon’s Colour Forecast for 2017.

And the lovely Lanalou Style blog picked our Delft and Imari placemats to help you “get the look” using¬†Plascon’s Terrain inspired¬†colour palette which is also featured in their Colour Forecast for 2017. You can read¬†the full article here.

Livingspace magazine was inspired by the bright colours¬†of summer, and featured our Yellow Squares and Pink Flamingo fabric as part of their Summer Lovin’ series. Incidentally, you can now buy Livingspace magazine from @home stores nationwide.

It appears that flamingoes never seem to go out of fashion, specially this time of the year when Summer is on the way. Woman & Home magazine thought our Pink Flamingo phone cover available from Hello Pretty was spot on fashionwise this season.

We are also delighted to let you all know that our phone covers are now available to order for Samsung Galaxy S7, as well as the iPhone SE and the new iPhone 7.

Spring is in the air…

Spring has sprung and the August sale (and hopefully winter) has blown away, and we’re already getting excited for summer! Not as much as little Grace here showing off her cute little face and her Pretty Proteas nappy cover.

Thanks so everyone who supported us, and took advantage of our August Blows sale, it has been a (whirl)wind of a month for us. We are now off on a 2 week break so we have decided to extend the sale in-store for the next two weeks, so you can still take advantage just in case you missed it!

But before we head off, we would like to share some of the wonderful media love we have received over the past month.

Visi magazine celebrated the Brazilian Olympics with a Carnival of Colour including our Pink Flamingo Cushion Cover.

pinkflamingoactualcushion_lr

Your Family magazine shared our Delft placemats as part of their 5 Best Delft Blue Buys.

And in shop news this month, we had a very exciting feature recently in the Sunday Times Property News.

In the shop, not only have we introduced lots of new Handmade By Me products lately, but we have also introduced our latest collaborative product with Windowsill, pressed plants. Even though we only have a few in stock at the moment we are very excited about all the different green and leafy possibilities that can be placed between 2 pieces of soldered glass.

And do come and see our brand new Alex Snell prints which were created specially for our little shop Рtitled Gothic Africa, and inspired by our little part of the world. These prints are part of a signed limited edition and are available exclusively from us either framed in soldered glass or unframed.

And last but not least, watch out Joburg, we are coming for you! We are VERY excited to be exhibiting at the Sanlam Handmade Contemporary Fair at Hyde Park shopping centre in October. Watch this space for more details or take a look at their website.

For the week that’s in it…look, see, win…

The Design Indaba Expo opens on Thursday so we have been crazy busy these last few weeks getting ourselves and our products ready for it. If you follow us on instagram, facebook and/or twitter, you may have noticed some sneak peeks of a few exciting new things we have up our sleeve for our stand, but just in case you missed them, here is a little teaser of what you can expect from Handmade By Me over the weekend. You can find us at stand H21, please come and say hi we would love to see you!

For those of you who have no idea what I am going on about…¬†“The Design Indaba Expo was inaugurated in 2004 and provides a commercial platform for the finest South African designers to leverage goods and services to the local and global markets. It also introduces the most influential international buyers to the finest South African creative products and encourages export.

As the only local platform that welcomes advertising, architecture, craft, d√©cor, film, fashion, graphic design, interior design, jewellery, new media, publishing, product design, and visual media under the same roof, Design Indaba Expo is a celebration of diversity.”

Have a look here for more information regarding the event.

And because we’re so busy getting ready for the Expo, we are doubling up on today’s post so we can spend next week recovering : )¬†I thought I might leave you¬†with this insanely large and extremely flattering article¬†on Handmade By Me and me, Sera Holland, in the latest Ideas Magazine. Thanks so much to them for the amazing¬†feature I am so unbelievably flattered and honoured!!

All you have to do is go to the Kamers facebook page, simply 1) like THEIR¬†post about our napkins & 2) comment what you’re looking forward to most at their¬†autumn shows. Easy as pie! So first of all our new range is FINALLY up and available to buy from the Handmade By Me online shop¬†as well as our shop on Etsy : ) We are still in the process of shooting the entire range so we will be adding new products all the time as we go along, but being who we are and what we do, you can pretty much order any product in any design. Then just down the road on Long Street there is a new Pop-Up Space launch! You are invited to our launch…

We are having a launch of our latest offerings at Handmade By Me this Thursday evening and we would like to invite you to join us in seeing what new things we have in store for you. We have lots of new designs, some new and exciting products, and something completely different for the whole family, which we are planning to keep a secret until Thursday : ) We hope we will see you there!

HMBM_Launch_Invite_F_LR

As you can see the launch is at the Department of Design which makes this launch kind of exciting in itself.¬†For those of who who don’t know about this yet the¬†Department of Design is a three week-long event that supports sustainability and collaboration. It is the initiative of the Government of the Netherlands as part of their contribution to World Design Capital Cape Town 2014.

dod_logo_resized

And it has been designed by none other than Droog, the Dutch-based architectural firm.¬†To fit in with the theme of sustainability, Droog has titled this structure ‚ÄúFLOW.‚Ä̬†The structure is almost entirely based out of reused materials that include bicycle seats, scrap wood, and plastic crates. By engaging with local artists and materials, Droog aims to create a unique and creative space that comes at no cost to Cape Town or her environment. After the Department of Design ends, Droog will take all of the materials used and return them to the city- either by re-selling, donating, or re-cycling.

Department of Design is a temporary space. It runs for three weeks only, and features key note speakers, workshops, demonstrations and activities as part of a set programme. A parallel programme will present events organised by local participants. All activities at Department of Design involve collaboration and contribute to the conversation to #cocreateSA.

For more information and a programme of events, have a look at their website www.departmentofdesign.nl

totes obvs…

I am delighted to let you all know that our Cape Town and Elephants designs are now available as tote bags? Totes¬†amaze? We know….and just cannot stop using that expression!! Our not-so-heartfelt apologies!! : ) We launched them at Kamers at the Castle this last weekend and they flew off the¬†shelves.

Totes

They are R320 each and are available from the Handmade By Me online shop, Hello Pretty, Chandler House, and more stockists coming soon.

Speaking of Kamers, thanks so much to everyone who popped in to the absolutely gorgeous Chandler House space to say hi and support us. We had the best time and still cannot get over how absolutely beautiful the Castle was as the venue to host this. What an honour to be a part of something so unique! Some of you may have seen these already but here are a few (slighty blurry) sneak peeks of our products at work. (I only wish I had taken more!)

you and me and thursdays…

I am¬†sure most of you know about First Thursdays¬†Cape Town, but do you know about Third Thursdays¬†Cape Town?¬†Third Thursdays is the East city edition of¬†First Thursdays, where you can explore Cape Town’s East city after hours for an evening of art, culture and great food. ¬†Art galleries and stores stay open until until 9pm. One of the places you really shouldn’t miss is ANOUK Furniture and Decor¬†situated below the Perspectives building in Roeland Street. ANOUK offers an eclectic mix of affordable furniture and d√©cor ‚Äď old and new ‚Äď catering for those in need of both basic and indulgent pieces. I was in there yesterday and there are some really beautiful pieces of antique furniture available selling at really good prices. Not only do they make a bit of a fuss for Third Thursdays by having various designers showcasing their products in the shop, but they have wine…and fun…and from this Third Thursdays onwards they will also be stocking our decorative placemats. I have attached a copy of the map for this Third Thursdays 22 May. ANOUK is no 12.

And while I’m going on about our lovely decorative¬†placemats, this week’s YOU magazine is also giving them some love in their “We Love” feature as part of their Lifestyle section.
