So as we mentioned in our last post we have lots of new things up our sleeves for 2015. First off, we have just launched our new range of locally produced phone covers for iPhone, Samsung and BlackBerry. You may have seen this pic on my instagram feed of the one I had made for my iPhone 6 in the Striking Strelitzias design.

Simply select the phone model of your choice when ordering. They are all R380 each. The following phone models are available:

Now available at the Watershed…

I wrote this post over a month or so ago, but unfortunately due to a rogue faulty fire extinguisher that went off one night, I had to hold off posting it while they sorted out the problem, which turned into a disaster. However, I am delighted to let you know that this lovely shop is finally back in action, and ready for the onslaught of Christmas shopping and summer loving in Cape Town.

Quirky Me and Flick Inc have teamed up to create this beautiful little shop under the stairs at the Watershed at the V&A Waterfront. Most of you probably already know about the Watershed, but if not, basically it was originally the Blue Shed next to the Aquarium, which has since been knocked down and beautifully put back together to house and support local designers and products from around South Africa by creating a “market-like” environment. Handmade By Me was going to have their own space there, but instead we are so happy and so lucky that we can supply our lovely things to Quirky Me and Flick Inc instead.

Quirky Me and Flick Inc may share a space, but they bring their own set of products to the store. I am really lucky as I am supplying my more monochromatic products to Flick Inc and my more colourful to Quirky Me, so you can in fact find a whole bunch of our stuff there…along with a selection of beautiful and quirky things from other various designers.

Screen shot 2014-10-14 at 18.21.01

Most of you will know Quirky Me from the Old Biscuit Mill. It is the second shop on your left as you come in and walk toward the courtyard, and is literally filled with all things quirky. Ingrid Corbett who owns the shop also has a product offering of her own (check out their cool place mats). Now they have opened up at the watershed and you can now find our lovely things at both of their stores.

“At Quirky Me my goal is to bring you beautiful and fun decor items that will help you shape your home into a space that reflects a little bit of your own off-beat personality. I conceptualise a large part of the products myself, and put them into production here in South Africa with the help of incredibly talented local designers and craftspeople. I also take huge pleasure in sourcing quirky products that catch my eye from local creatives and artisans, as well as working with these talents to create products and ranges that are specific to my store.”

FLICK-INC-LOGO-FINAL

Flick Inc is now the combined name for Flick Glass and My China Ceramics, both of which are very well known and established brands started and run by Frances Kierman. When I first arrived back in Cape Town in 2012 and was just starting out with Handmade By Me, you might remember that I shared a space at the Hout Bay Market with Frances and 2 other lovely ladies. If you ever came to visit me there, you may remember the gorgeous ceramics we had available to buy, as well as the pretty shiny earrings that always sold so well – well thats essentially Flick inc. And now after a few years break we get to display our products together again.

“Flick Glass is a quality glass studio known for its innovative and beautiful jewellery. We aspire to creating works of art that are individually hand crafted and unique.”

Enjoying the success of Flick Glass, Frances was inspired to do a new project and after much trial and error launched MY CHINA Ceramics at the Design Indaba in February 2008. South Africa’s beautiful and interesting fynbos flowers are Frances’ inspiration. She is in love with South African bird images and other wild and interesting creatures. Her drawings are made into transfers and she fires them into her stoneware ceramics. As the years have gone by the My China range keeps growing and developing, incorporating new ceramic shapes and new drawings. She is also greatly inspired by her Mom, Wynsome and brother, Gene who are amazing artists and always willing to lend a hand.”

The Watershed is located on Dock Road, next to the Two Oceans Aquarium and is open daily from 10h00 – 19h00.

sentimental home…

I found this lovely piece of writing (below) somewhere in the realm of facebook, and thought that it was the closest thing I have seen yet, which appropriately describes what supporting local designers and makers and their handmade products is all about. It really rings true to me as a maker of products, and the sentiment is very sweet. Unfortunately I could not find the person to credit directly, so please, if any of you know, will you let me know so that I can say thank you for these lovely words.

And with that I would love to share with you this beautiful shoot that Home en Tuis Magazine did with my lovely stockist The Green Elephant Collective. It came out so beautifully, and it really goes to show that you don’t have to completely redo your home to give it a make over.

get your Christmas shop on…

So its been a busy last few weeks with my pop-up shop, The Shoestring Collective, officially closing its doors at Gardens Centre, Cape Town. It has been the most incredible experience of my life, and as sad as I am to see it go, I am delighted to finally be able to relax and unwind…and spend more time on Handmade By Me : )

For those of you who are not on facebook, I would like to introduce to you my Christmas Jumper Christmas range! With a huge norwegian scanda influence, as well as my missing of the infamous cheesy Christmas Jumper parties back in Dublin (it’s just too damn hot here!), I have designed and created a very wintery and northern-hemisphere-nostalgic Christmas pattern. The design is available in red and mint green, and I have made Christmas stockings (perfect gifts for little children), Christmas tea towels, Christmas aprons (made to order), and Christmas gift wrap. All available to buy from the Handmade By Me online shop and various other stockists : )

Speaking of stockists, I am really delighted to let you all know about an amazing new South African designer shop called SAM (South African Market) which will be opening its doors on Bree Street later in the week. I will have a full range of Handmade By Me products available to buy there, and as far as I know there are a lot of pretty awesome designers involved, which means a lot of pretty awesome things to buy! Here is a link to their facebook page and their website will be live very soon!

I also want to let you all know that I will be at The Treasury Market‘s Christmas market in Stellenbosch this coming Saturday. Its always a good day out there, and there will be lots of lovely designers joining me there! This will probably be the only market that I am going to be part of before Christmas, so I really hope to see you all there to toast an incredible year end, and hopefully a very exciting new year ahead!

House and Leisure Night Market

I just want to give all my Joburg peeps a heads up that all kinds of delicious and delightful Handmade by Me products will be available to buy at the first House and Leisure Night Market in Kramerville this Thursday! Our super awesome stockist Room Online will be selling a lovely selection of our products, including our new tote bags and purses, along with a huge array of other gorgeous designer goods.

“When it comes to optimising your night market shopping experience, House and Leisure has specially selected some of South Africa’s foremost designers, makers and artisans to showcase and sell their creations. From fashion to homeware, you’ll be able to find gorgeous offerings from top-quality vendors.”

Please do one of these in Cape Town House and Leisure!!

428636_609648712398575_533955815_n
In anticipation of the event this is what House and Leisure had to say about Room Online:

“When it comes to craft and design, too often the fruits of the independent designer’s creativity remain hidden away in tiny studios and backrooms, where few can appreciate or acquire these precious gems. This is especially true in South Africa, where independent designers typically don’t have the budget or resources to market their goods on a large scale.

Room Online hopes to change all that. We’re the first of our kind: an online platform whose primary mission is to showcase South Africa’s wealth of local design and decor talent. As the founders, we’re passionate about all things South African. Because of this, we’ve trawled the length and breadth of our vibrant country to be bring you the very best in design and decor. We’ve created an online retail space where you can browse and buy beautiful things for your home, all of which have been locally-inspired, locally-designed and locally-produced.”

A colourful commission for Cillian Johnston…

Last year I was approached by an Irish furniture and design company called Cillian Johnston who were looking for someone to help them design and create a unique print for fabric, that they could then make into cushions and lampshades. The brief was to come up with a graphic representation, but not a directly literal representation, of a lamp that was awarded best new product in the category “Table Top and Interiors” at Ireland’s premier design and craft expo, Showcase Ireland, 2012, The Aran Beag rectangle lamp. It has two Aran knitted panels with a distinct cable pattern on the front and back of the base, as you can see below, and that was going to be the inspiration behind my design.

aran_beag_pink_rectangle_needlesaran_beag_grey_rectangle_black_shade

They wanted me to try and use the aran knit style and the purply colours like the first lamp above, but weren’t neccessarily tied to it. And so I did some research on different aran knit styles and the one that grabbed me the most was the honeycomb style, featured in the centre of the jersey below.

027-Arans-Aran-Knitting-Pattern-500px

I took 2 different ideas, one of making the basic repeat pattern very graphic and bold following the honeycomb aran knit style (kind of), and the other of highlighting the smaller finer detail of the actual knitting stitches themselves. I wanted to try and show the changing colours and textures of different angles of the stitches graphically, and did so using lots and lots of different purply and bluey photographic textures…

CJ2

Below is a closeup of the pattern…the difference in scales of the pattern, up close and at a distance, allows the pattern to be used to create two completely different styles that can work together as a team or completely on their own.

CJ1

Here are some of the pictures they took to show me their finished products. Note the beautiful hexagonal shaped wooden buttons which highlight and work so well with the honeycomb pattern. We decided to use use the bigger scale on the front of the cushion, and the smaller on the back so you could switch them around or feature them side by side.

“Award winning master craftsman Cillían Johnston spent many years in furniture making and antique restoration before being joined by his industrial designer wife, Lisa in 2003. Since then they have been servicing and supplying private clients, architects, interior designers and furniture contractors nationwide and in the UK with innovative and original furniture design.

In 2011 they expanded their business into home accessory and giftware design when they began working on a range of lighting products called “Aran Beag” that are inspired by the traditional craft of Aran knitting.

Cillían has developed a solid reputation for excellence in workmanship using the best quality materials, in particular Irish hardwoods and his Aran Beag lamps are no exception. The timelessness of Cillían’s products and exacting finish to detail are qualities maintained from the business’s inception.

It is Cillían’s uncompromising attention to detail that sets him apart: “We are obsessed with quality; nothing leaves our workshop until I’m happy with it”.”
