New year, new work.

Happy new year and a warm welcome back to you all! Here’s hoping your 2020 is already off to a great start.

As most of you know, last year was a big change for me, trying to make my business more about design rather than production, and even though the lines are still often blurred, I feel like we are heading in the right direction.

This year I would like to try and take on some more exciting design jobs, so if you know of anyone looking, please send them my way, or send on their details. Here is a link to my online design portfolio. First prize would really be to partner up with a client or small business who needs regular ongoing work 2-3 days a week, basically something to pay the bills so I can continue with my other creative work in the meantime. But this might be hard to find, so I am just putting it out there to see.

Here are some of my favourite design projects and highlights from 2019. Please click on the main images and links to find out more about any of them if you are interested.

Of all the projects I did last year, this has to be my favourite! It is also something I have always wanted to do. I created a Delft plate inspired illustration for a carpet for The Tasting Room at Vergenoegd Low Wine Farm outside Stellenbosch in Cape Town, South Africa.

The brief was to create a unique Cape Dutch style plate illustration inspired by the landscape and traditions of Vergenoegd Wine Farm. The illustration incorporates the original Vergenoegd Cape Dutch homestead and it’s infamous Indian Runner Ducks who help keep the farm pesticide and pest free, which is also represented by the snail who indicates a healthy farm, the grape vines of course which are used to make their famous wines, the local Robin Chat who represents a fertile farm, and all the beautiful indigenous and local blooms found in and around the farm such as the Protea, Bladder Hibiscus, Arum Lily, Aandblom, Moraea, Angustifolia, Marguerite, Oxalis, Peacock flower, Sour Fig, Romulea Hirsuta amongst others…

I designed a logo, identity and branding for a nail, brow and lash bar called Briyé.

I designed a range of bespoke products for well known ceramicist Anthony Shapiro for his Ant + Linda COLLECT ceramic range.

For the designs, we shot the ceramic patterns which had been carved into the clay so you can see the handmade marks and natural texture of the carving on the fired clay, and turned them into repeat patterns to be printed and used on the various products.

I created some placemats for Spier Wine Farm in Cape Town, South Africa, for their farm-to-table restaurant called EIGHT. They are well known for their ethical farm-sourced produce, and for their chickens!

I made some placemats to go with an overseas customer’s collection of Minton’s Cockatrice plates.

I designed a foliage inspired pattern for some fabric for a customer who wanted to make her own dress for a special event.

I created two different designs for fabric for a client looking to start her own fashion range.

The first brief was to create an “indian block print” looking design which had to incorporate something floral (ideally local) and a bee. I used a South African flower called a Wurmbea Elatior, also known as a salt & pepper flower, and created this repeat pattern below.

I was then asked to create another pattern to compliment, but also offset the first design. This time the brief was to include beehives and/or beehomes as well as the same bee.

We created a peaock inspired print for a client starting their own range of home decor products.

We also added some new products to the range we currently make for The Trading Co at Spice Route and The Yard

Wishing you all a happy, healthy and creative year ahead.

Lesotho Landscape…

This is a design for fabric which I created last year for a local fashion designer from Lesotho, who was planning to represent Lesotho in a few international fashion shows later in the year. I recently unfortunately found out that they are no longer going ahead with the shows, but I wanted to share this design with you anyway because I really had such fun working on it.

The design was meant to represent the landscape of the country of Lesotho, and was mostly inspired by the rolling hills and the well known Maletsunya Falls. I also included all kinds of local fauna and flora including Lammergeier birds, Impala lilies, Peach trees and lots of different types of Aloes, as well as some of the other things you might find in the area such as little villages and lots of cows. Isn’t Lesotho just such a beautiful little part of the world?

The idea was that the design would be printed at a massive scale so it would become slightly abstract when used on smaller areas of some of the garments.

An example of how some of the smaller crops of the design would look

I hope to be able to share some more projects and design commissions that I have been working on recently soon, so watch this space for updates.

Wishing you all a lovely week ahead!

Summer update…☀🐠🍦🌻⚡🔥

Hooray, summer is finally on its way, and so I thought it might be time for a little Handmade By Me update.

I can’t believe it has been so long since our last post, but while it may look like things have been very quiet on the outside, there has actually been a whole lot going on on the inside. But with that being said, there is one small issue and that is that the only problem with creating products for others and not for yourself, is that you don’t get to choose when the projects get launched, or even if they get launched, or when you can show some sneak peeks of what you are working on. So while we have been working on some seriously exciting projects behind the scenes, we have absolutely nothing that we can show you just yet!

What I can tell you, is that I have been working on some some exciting fashion brands creating and developing new designs for fabric, and then also helping others with developing existing designs into patterns and getting them ready to print. And we are also working on a few more custom designs and products for some lovely local restaurants, retailers and interior designers.

On a completely different note, I have also been really busy frantically working on a little collaboration I am doing with Anthony Shapiro, master of clay and wheel thrower extraordinaire : ) for Sanlam Handmade Contemporary Fair, an amazing design show which is on in Joburg this weekend. I am not sure if you are familiar with my pottery work, you may have seen some pics on my instagram feed, but Anthony has given me some of his bowls and vases that I have decorated using my favourite technique called Sgraffito, a form of decoration made by scratching through a surface to reveal a lower layer of a contrasting colour. Those who know me well will know to expect to see lots of foliage and lots of florals.

If you live in Joburg and have not been to this show do yourself a favour and go check it out, it is really one of my favourite shows with all the best of the best of South African and African design! We were lucky enough to be a part of it a couple of years ago and we loved every minute.

The show is on from 12-14 October on the rooftop of Hyde Park Shopping Centre. Look out out for COLLECT by Anthony Shapiro in the Homeware Pavilion, and click here for more info about the show.

Then just a little side note that our online shop is still open for any fabric and wallpaper orders. I am so happy to see this part of our business is still doing so well.

And for any of our lovely stockists out there, just a small reminder that Christmas is around the corner (like I really need to remind you; )) so you might want to get those wholesale orders in as soon as possible.

I am happy to say that we still have a lovely bunch of retailers still carrying our products so if you are after some of our goodies please check out our list of stockists.

Hope to see you back here with some pics of what’s been going on, but until then, wishing you all a wonderful week ahead.

What we’re up to…

It has been a little while since we made the decision to close our doors and make some changes to our little business, and I thought maybe it was time for an update, as you may be wondering what we have been up to lately, or possibly where we are going.

Life sometimes has a way of deciding things for you even though you think you know better, and as much as we have spent most of our time wrapping up handmade by me and selling off all our last stock, as well as enjoying a small break, the demand for our products is still going strong. And so, with that in mind, we have decided to keep our wholesale orders open for a little while longer. Our online shop will continue to sell our fabrics and wallpapers, but anyone looking for any other products will need to purchase directly from our list of stockists.

We have also been very fortunate to have had some exciting bespoke design projects on the go. Amongst others, we made slippers for Ellerman House and introduced tote bags to the range of products we previously created for Klein Constantia, and we have a number of other exciting opportunities still in progress or in the pipeline. This for me has been very serendipitous, as well as creatively rewarding,  and I am very excited to see where it goes.

If you’re still not sure what the hell we’re doing, or maybe you’re wondering how we can work together, these are our core services on offer below.

Design Service

Handmade By Me has extensive experience in designing and developing prints and patterns that can be applied to any surface including apparel, home furnishing, wall decor, gift items, accessories and paper goods.

We also offer a full graphic design service from logos and branding to newsletters and web banners.

If you are looking for any graphic or pattern/graphic design assistance, or possibly a design collaboration (which we LOVE), please email us for more info and rates.

Design & Product Service

We offer a custom design and print service on all our available fabrics and wallpapers. Whether you have a design in mind, or if you need design assistance, we can have the products printed for you.

We also assist other businesses with designing, creating and producing bespoke ranges of high quality locally-made products that are unique to them. Some of our clients include The Trading Store at Spice Route, Klein Constantia, Ellerman House and Singita Game Reserve.

If you are a hotel or shop looking to have some bespoke products made specially for you please email us for more info.

Here are some custom projects we have worked on previously.

Wholesale orders

If you are interested in stocking some of our products, please email us for a catalogue and wholesale price list. Please note minimums do apply and we do not offer products on consignment.

Online shop

Our fabric and wallpaper are still readily available to order online. And we still have a few more items left on sale if anyone is looking for any last-minute bargains.

And if you are a customer looking to purchase any of our products specifically, we would be happy to point you in the direction of your nearest stockist.

From Parys to Paris…

I have always wanted to use the term from Parys to Paris, and today it is perfectly appropriate, because as of right now, Handmade By Me products are available to buy both from En Style in Parys, South Africa, and from Le BHV Marais in Paris, France : )

LeBHVLeBHV

JO8B5065_1

In a project championed by Artlogic, This is Cape Town and Le BHV Marais, we will see 30 exhibitors retailing their luxury goods from 14th June until the 31st of July at Le BHV Marais.

The department store will house a selection of exceptionally well made artisanal South African brands across various design categories namely; fashion, furniture, accessories, beauty, homeware and decor – all in full fusion. With over 60 000 daily visitors, the store presents an invaluable opportunity of exposing international audiences and buyers to the electric pulse of a South African creative energy that redefines the art of fine living.”

One of our friends in Paris stopped by the exhibition and made this little video for us on Facebook.

And while we have been trying to roll out our full range of products in our new Biotica designs, we have been very fortunate to have received such incredible love from both the public and from the media.

But before we share some of the media news, I wanted to first let you know that the giveaway we are doing with the gorgeous I Want That blog (where you can win 2 cushion covers in the design of your choice) is almost closed, so best you get in here very quickly if you if you still want a chance to WIN.

Roberta Thatcher from Sunday Times Home did a little Sunday inspiration feature discussing a few of our favourite things at the moment.

We were very honoured to be a part of this incredible feature in Woman & Home magazine, where they tell the stories of 3 different locals who took their crafts to the next level.

Home magazine made us travel back in time with these delightfully retro finds, including our Cape Town tray, for the home.

And House & Leisure probably didn’t even know it, but they showed off our Green Sprigs and Geometric Green cushions in a photo from the beautiful shoot done by Design Store (bottom right). Who, BTW, have just listed our new Biotica range as part of their current offering.

Introducing BIOTICA – Handmade By Me’s new nature-inspired range

Introducing BIOTICA, our new range of designs and products.

‘BIOTICA means relating to or resulting from living organisms’. While having surrounded ourselves with the leaves, flowers and cuttings of the most beautiful plants over the past year, largely thanks to Windowsill, we didn’t have to go too far to find inspiration for our new range.

While we were working on BIOTICA, we really loved playing around with both the combination and the contrast of print & pattern, illustration & photography, and geometric & organic.

We also seem to have an insatiable desire for millenial pink this season!

BIOTICA consists of 8 new designs and includes a variety of nature-inspired decorative products including soft furnishings, wallpaper, fabric, homeware and stationery.

While all the products below, and online, are readily available to order now, we will also be adding new products to the range over the next few weeks.

You can view BIOTICA online or pop in to our retail store in Cape Town.

For those of you who live in other parts of the country, BIOTICA will be live and available to order online from Wednesday.

Here is a sneak peek of what has been happening behind the scenes on our Instagram feed and what you can expect to see on Wednesday.

Please feel free to bring your friends and spread the word.

I hope to see you there!

April new(s)

We are now totally beyond excited to show you our new range of designs and products, but we are STILL unfortunately waiting on our beautiful backing fabric to arrive for our cushion covers. It was meant to arrive earlier this month, but with all the public holidays messing us around a bit, we have been told that it will now only be ready in May : (

So while we (im)patiently wait for it to all come together, we wanted to share a few things that have been going on behind the scenes, and how you can still get your hands on some of our new designs in the mean time.

These images were some sneak peeks we recently shared on our Instagram feed.

You may have seen last week on our Facebook page and Twitter feed that our trays, pot stands and chopping boards are now available to pre-order in both of our new Foliage colour ways : )

The very very first products in our Foliage on Green and Flora designs are presently on their way to Joburg for Kamers this weekend with PRESENTspace. The show will be on from 26-30 April at St John’s College in Houghton.

So while we may have been a bit quiet this month, while we have been getting our new designs ready for print, we have been lucky enough to have had lots of media love.

We were delighted to see our online shop featured in Good Housekeeping SA.
