New year, new work.

Happy new year and a warm welcome back to you all! Here’s hoping your 2020 is already off to a great start.

As most of you know, last year was a big change for me, trying to make my business more about design rather than production, and even though the lines are still often blurred, I feel like we are heading in the right direction.

This year I would like to try and take on some more exciting design jobs, so if you know of anyone looking, please send them my way, or send on their details. Here is a link to my online design portfolio. First prize would really be to partner up with a client or small business who needs regular ongoing work 2-3 days a week, basically something to pay the bills so I can continue with my other creative work in the meantime. But this might be hard to find, so I am just putting it out there to see.

Here are some of my favourite design projects and highlights from 2019. Please click on the main images and links to find out more about any of them if you are interested.

Of all the projects I did last year, this has to be my favourite! It is also something I have always wanted to do. I created a Delft plate inspired illustration for a carpet for The Tasting Room at Vergenoegd Low Wine Farm outside Stellenbosch in Cape Town, South Africa.

The brief was to create a unique Cape Dutch style plate illustration inspired by the landscape and traditions of Vergenoegd Wine Farm. The illustration incorporates the original Vergenoegd Cape Dutch homestead and it’s infamous Indian Runner Ducks who help keep the farm pesticide and pest free, which is also represented by the snail who indicates a healthy farm, the grape vines of course which are used to make their famous wines, the local Robin Chat who represents a fertile farm, and all the beautiful indigenous and local blooms found in and around the farm such as the Protea, Bladder Hibiscus, Arum Lily, Aandblom, Moraea, Angustifolia, Marguerite, Oxalis, Peacock flower, Sour Fig, Romulea Hirsuta amongst others…

I designed a logo, identity and branding for a nail, brow and lash bar called Briyé.

I designed a range of bespoke products for well known ceramicist Anthony Shapiro for his Ant + Linda COLLECT ceramic range.

For the designs, we shot the ceramic patterns which had been carved into the clay so you can see the handmade marks and natural texture of the carving on the fired clay, and turned them into repeat patterns to be printed and used on the various products.

I created some placemats for Spier Wine Farm in Cape Town, South Africa, for their farm-to-table restaurant called EIGHT. They are well known for their ethical farm-sourced produce, and for their chickens!

I made some placemats to go with an overseas customer’s collection of Minton’s Cockatrice plates.

I designed a foliage inspired pattern for some fabric for a customer who wanted to make her own dress for a special event.

I created two different designs for fabric for a client looking to start her own fashion range.

The first brief was to create an “indian block print” looking design which had to incorporate something floral (ideally local) and a bee. I used a South African flower called a Wurmbea Elatior, also known as a salt & pepper flower, and created this repeat pattern below.

I was then asked to create another pattern to compliment, but also offset the first design. This time the brief was to include beehives and/or beehomes as well as the same bee.

We created a peaock inspired print for a client starting their own range of home decor products.

We also added some new products to the range we currently make for The Trading Co at Spice Route and The Yard

Wishing you all a happy, healthy and creative year ahead.

Thank you

So while we frantically run around trying to get the last of the Christmas orders out, we wanted to stop and take a moment to thank each and every one of you who have supported us in any way over the past year.

2017 has definitely been the most interesting of years for us, with all kinds of highs and lows, and everything you can imagine in between. And we just can’t tell you how much we appreciate everything from the tiniest of orders in the shop, to the biggest of orders going overseas, the recommendations and suggestions, the pics and the shares, the likes, and most importantly all the love! We honestly wouldn’t be here without you. So, from all of us at Handmade By Me, we would like to say a big THANK YOU.

Wishing you all the happiest of holidays and a merry Christmas if you celebrate, and we can’t wait to see you back here next year!

Sera

Please note that tomorrow (wednesday) is the last day for any online orders in time for Xmas, but the Handmade By Me + Windowsill shop will be open until and including Saturday 23 December for any last-minute needs.

And we will be closing for small break from 23 December to 9 January 2018.

And in other news, we recently added some new products to our range. Our new double-sided LUX Panama Foliage 60x60cm cushion covers, as well as our lampshades!

We also added 2 new colour ways to our Foliage Wallpaper. Introducing Light Green and Turquoise, what do you think?

As you well know, we just love seeing what our customers do with our fabrics. Isn’t this twinset just delicious in our Foliage on Green lux panama fabric?

You might remember we were recently looking for some donations for the the S-Cape project with Lanalou Style and Studio Melissa Louise where they were given the opportunity to revamp and transform a safe house and create an uplifting space for young women coming out of trafficking and sexual exploitation.

Well done Lana and Melissa on a really great job! And pretty amazing considering you relied solely on donations!

We’re so excited to see the final result! And so happy we got to play a very small part in this really fantastic initiative.

Handmade By Me has been lucky enough to receive some serious media love over the past month which we would love to share with you.

Here is a Q&A with myself in the latest Garden & Home magazine where I reveal my favourite millenial pink finds. If you didn’t know already, I am quite clearly obsessed!

G&H Nov17

We have also been lucky enough to have been featured in Elle Decoration‘s floral inspirations as well as their favourites inspired by the East. See if you can spot our Imari placemats as well as our Foliage cushion covers.

Home magazine gave our Foliage on Pink cushion cover the green light.

And Fair Lady magazine picked our Prickly Pears hotel slippers as one of their Fauna & Flora favourites.

And in case you missed our recent social media posts, we shared some of our latest customer pics. Here is a sneak peek of our Foliage on Pink wallpaper recently installed in this beautiful bathroom.IMG_4526

And one of our regular customer’s, Janet, sent us this pic of her Pretty Proteas blind she had made to match the lampshades in her Airbnb apartment in Gardens.

Oh hey baby…

We’re having a super cute baby fest over here at Handmade By Me thanks to all the lovely photographs we have received of your little tiny tots enjoying their Handmade By Me goodies : ) We do have to say that our customers have the cutest kids!!!

Featured above our some of our favourite 100% cotton muslin baby blankets and burp cloth/bandana bibs, our nappy covers, Big 5 placemats (which turn into face masks) and cushion covers.

We have also recently added our new Foliage colour ways to our range of 100% cotton muslin products.

Our Striking Strelitzias nappy cover made it into Living & Loving magazine‘s selection of Local is Lekker for Heritage month.

And we are also delighted to let you know that we will very soon be adding two new products to our kids range : )

You might remember we were looking to give our fabric off-cuts away to a good cause a few months ago – well the lovely Amander took them on, taught herself to sew and will be soon be providing us and her new business with some lovely new products to sell at various markets, as well as at the Handmade By Me + Windowsill shop. All proceeds for these products go straight to Amander and her new business, we are merely supporting her with fabric and advice, and a happy place to sell her wares : )

First up are these gorgeous little rag dollies which are now for sale (along with some other products made by Amander). Aren’t they just the sweetest? We can’t wait to see some of these in our latest designs. And don’t worry boys, we have monkeys and other animals coming soon.

IMG_4122

And next up will be floppy kids hats for Summer! We are busy prototyping these with Amander so watch this space to find out when you will be able to get your hands on one.

If you would like to support Amander, you are very welcome to pop into the shop to buy some of her wares (they make great gifts), or email me if you might be interested in her making up some products for you.

Spring into September…

Spring has sprung and all kinds of floral motifs are in the air : ) We specially liked this one from Livingspace magazine featuring their Ed’s Choice. This is our favourite time of the year and we can’t wait for the warmer weather to arrive. And along with it, all the beautiful plants and flowers that we are so inspired by!

Spring is a time for rebirth, and if you’re ready for a breath of fresh air, you can have a look at some of the newest products we have added to our Biotica range lately.

Our soft 100% cotton muslin baby blanket swaddles and burp cloth/bandana bibs are now available in our two Foliage colour ways.

If you are looking for inspiration you can also have a look at how some of our happy customers have styled their own photos of our products. We’d love to see what you do with our things, so please feel free to share your home or DIY inspiration with us, or tag us on Instagram.

And while have been having a rather quiet time over the winter months, it is so great to see some others have been very busy at it.

The CDI (Craft & Design Institute), along with their new name because they are now a national enterprise, have just launched their new Design Directory 2017-2018. We were so happy to see ourselves included, and in such a big spread, alongside such a wealth of national talent. We are delighted to let you know that we have a few copies of the Design Directory on sale at the Handmade By Me + Windowsill shop if you are interested. They are R290 each. You can also order a copy online here.

Double love for us from Sunday Times‘ Home’s Ed’s Picks this month with different products being selected for two issues in a row : ) Firstly our Foliage on Green cushion cover and then our Prickly Pears hotel slippers.

Sarie magazine featured our Foliage on Pink wallpaper.

And Home Magazine showed us how to breathe life into our décor using scatter cushions.

Invite to the launch of BIOTICA

ShopBanner_BIOTICA

Please join us for the soft launch of our new range, BIOTICA, at the Handmade By Me + Windowsill shop on Wednesday 31 May 2017. We will be open from 11am – 7pm in the evening, so please pop by any time.

BIOTICA means relating to or resulting from living organisms. While having surrounded ourselves with the leaves, flowers and cuttings of the most beautiful plants over the past year, largely thanks to Windowsill, we didn’t have to go too far to find inspiration for our new range.

For those of you who live in other parts of the country, BIOTICA will be live and available to order online from Wednesday.

Here is a sneak peek of what has been happening behind the scenes on our Instagram feed and what you can expect to see on Wednesday.

Please feel free to bring your friends and spread the word.

I hope to see you there!

Sera
