Masks, Pacifiers and Coronacommissions…

I know it has been a while since I last posted but I wanted to share 3 great initiatives I am busy with to see if anyone would like to support any of them.

MASKS for Ladles of Love

I’m sure most of you may know the absolutely incredible and wonderful work that the lovely people from Ladles of Love are doing right here in Cape Town. I myself have been, and currently am, a part of their incredible sandwich making drive (which over the past few weeks have collected over 360 000 sandwiches, 105 000 eggs and are providing 4000 hot meals a day and 10 tonnes of fresh produce and non perishables per week).

Food is something close to my heart. I love to cook, I love to eat and it has really been one of the things that has kept me from spiraling through this crazy coronacoaster. BUT there is guilt. As a lot of us South Africans have – of the disparity between the haves and the have nots. How can I post pics of my roast lamb while others are waiting in a 3km queue just for the basics. While I am not able to go out and save the world, or throw money at the problem, I have scoured every cupboard and every box in my flat for every last possible piece of Handmade By Me fabric which I am donating to raise some funds for Ladles of Love who are just killing it out there!

We have teamed up with our friends at Shweetproducts and Shweetkids who will be making and distributing the masks right here in Vredehoek, Cape Town, and providing some income for a few women in the area who need it.

R10 from every mask purchased will be donated to Ladles of Love, as well as 1 mask for every 10 purchased.

Adults and kids sizes available in 2 different styles, 1 which includes a nose bridge to help stop those glasses from steaming.

You can place your orders directly with Shweet products. Here is a link. They also have an amazing selection of masks in their own shweshwe prints.

PACIFIER CLIPS for empowering Women

A few months ago I was contacted by a young woman looking for off-cuts to re-use or re-purpose into products which would help lessen the impact on the environment, as well as help empower a group of women she was training. All I really had at the time were a bunch of really thin long strips and pieces in strange little shapes which I happily donated. I honestly wasn’t sure they could be used to make anything without patching them altogether, but they showed me : ) And I am so glad they did because look how cute these little pacifier clips are.

Orders can be placed directly with Wonderlands via instagram, or use this email add.

CORONACOMMISSIONS for Coronacare, Ladles of Love or the charity of your choice.

I am not sure if you have seen the incredible initiative created by koooooos where artists around the country are taking on various commissions to help support different charities that help the most vulnerable South Africans while we navigate this awful Pandemic. I am a bit nervous about this as I am merely a budding artist, but I am willing to throw my hat into the ring and do a series of little A5 (21×14.8cm) paintings if anyone is interested.

The way that is works is that you contact me with your image of choice just to confirm your interest. You donate R600 to either Coronacare or Ladles of Love (or to a charity close to your heart), send me proof of payment of your donation, and voila. I will be sending out all paintings after the lockdown. Please note that delivery will be charged separately.

I’m calling this my coronacommission postcard series (because of the size) so I’d like to encourage people to commission one for a friend or family member far away. I’ll be arranging shipping after the lockdown and I can send anywhere in the world.

I would love to encourage you to send me your favourite landscape, seascape, mountain or sky, your favourite view, or a special holiday place, or your favourite flowers or tree (you know I love a floral). My painting style is quite loose and painting with a palette knife on such a small canvas is a bit like painting with your elbow so please no people, pets or tiny detail.

This is all for a good cause and I would like to have fun so what you imagine you’re going to get and what you actually get might be quite different. I want to keep these abstract and playful so I hope you will indulge me : )

This was the first one I did, of our much missed Lion’s Head mountain, commissioned by my sister Kate Bosman for Coronacare. I will be posting the coronacommissions on Instagram so you can follow me there to see how they turn out.

Otherwise I hope you are all staying safe and keeping sane out there. I will leave you with my new mantra, an image I found online that really resonates with me at the moment, although I have no idea who to credit for this, so I do apologise.

Take care and stay safe out there!

Sera
